Today, we continue down our list of frequently asked questions.

What Type of Mattress Should I Buy?

Mattresses can be a controversial topic as well, and there are a lot of confusing options to choose from. Some mattresses are marketed as ‘endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association’ or whatnot. My opinion is that this is purely a way to appeal to authority through marketing and not based on a significant understanding of human biomechanics.

Choosing the right mattress is a highly personal decision; we have to choose between two factors: support and comfort.

We want a soft comfortable mattress, but not too soft to compromise the level of support.

Here’s the bottom line: go with a mattress that is as firm as possible, but comfortable enough for you to sleep on. The firmer the mattress, the better. But it has to be comfortable enough for you to relax and fall asleep on. Don’t simply rely on reviews or feel shy to give a mattress a try. Lift your feet off the ground, lay in it for enough time to see how comfortable you feel and to understand how well it’s supporting your body.

Again, the firmer the better as it means better support, but make sure you feel comfortable enough to be able to sleep in it.

Why do I Wake Up Stiff and Achy?

If you wake up stiff, sore, and achy, in most cases, it’s not your mattress, or how you were laying while you were sleeping, or your pillow, or whatever; the problem is YOU.

More specifically, the problem is likely inside of you: your spine alignment.

Whatever you were subjecting yourself to while you were sleeping was very likely stressing your spine and exacerbating a condition that was already present.

It’s like you have a small fire smouldering below perception, and the stress and strain from your sleeping habits (bad position, too tall of a pillow, a mattress that is too soft, etc.) are the gasoline that you throw on the fire. The gasoline is not the cause, the fire was there all along and is the fundamental problem that needs to be addressed.

If you change your pillow or your mattress, you may feel better temporarily, but the problem is likely still present in your spine. You have not corrected the CAUSE of the pain.

You shouldn’t wake up stiff and in pain. If you do, you have a problem in your spine that needs proper attention. You need to put the fire out, not just eliminate the gasoline.

But the best thing you can do to improve your sleeping habits, feel more rested when you wake up, and to have more energy throughout your day is to get your spine checked for spine problems and nervous system dysfunction.
