One reason that some people are a little leery of getting their spine checked by a chiropractor is because they are concerned about the adjustment. They may have found videos on YouTube of people being adjusted and the have a bit of fear around the “popping” and “cracking” sound that is often featured on these videos to get hits on the internet.
The sound associated with the chiropractic adjustment is actually not that important.
Sometimes there is a sound and sometimes there is a very effective adjustment delivered, that provides a lot of benefit, with no audible sound whatsoever. The popping sound is due to a change in pressure as the joint is moved in a specific way—chiropractors really don’t care if there is a sound at all.
We are more concerned with the degree and quality of movement that was achieved with the adjustment. Motion is life; and your spine has be flexibly, stable, and well-aligned in order for you to be healthy.

That being said, we highly recommended that you DO NOT forcefully twist or pull yourself to force a “pop” or cracking sound in your neck or back. This unspecific, broad wrenching of your spine will rarely address the misaligned area of your spine and, in many cases, this force can cause more problems down the road.
You might be injuring healthy ligaments, muscles, or other tissues, causing excessive mobility in your spine, greatly complicating your spinal condition.
Don’t “crack” your own back. That is not the same as being adjusted by a qualified and highly experiencedchiropractor.
Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to asses you for areas of misalignment (known as subluxations) in your spine. Once we can confirm that chiropractic is right for you, we will provide chiropractic adjustments to solve your specific problem.
What do adjustments do?
- Restores spine alignment
- Improves flexibility and movement
- Reduces stress to muscles, ligaments, and discs
- Improves nerve system function
- Improves posture
- Reduce pain
- Improve overall health
In most case, people feel immediate relief after being adjusted. They often feel stress and tension melting away and a sense of lightness throughout their body. They experience more looseness in their spine and greater flexibility. They often want breathe deeper and stand up straighter.
Sometimes due to inflammation and long-term muscle tension people may feel slight soreness or discomfort associated with the adjustment. This can actually be a very good sign initially, because this “good soreness” can be sign that healing has started.
“I’ve had pain for quite some time. The pain can get annoying at times, especially after sitting down for long hours or carrying heavy items. Most of the time, all I can do to ease the pain would be to give it a light massage.
The whole chiropractic experience was really new to me and the sound of the adjustments was pretty scary at first. But I quickly got used to it and after a month of adjustment sessions, I felt the lessening of pain in my left shoulder, which is a great relief to me. Furthermore, I felt that I am getting more quality sleep and hence wake up each morning more refreshed.
Also, from this experience, I have come to understand the importance of adopting good posture and have been trying to consciously sit and stand properly.” – Joanna Lim
